Learn Basic

What is a good book to learn basic Brazilian Portuguese?
I’m going to brasil in a month and i need to learn just some really basic stuff
well, as someone currently learning Brazilian Portuguese, the best answer is — NO book. Portuguese is about 50% spanish in written form, and pronounced about 10% like spanish. To learn from a book with NO audio would be similar to trying to speak written french — what is written is just not like what is spoken. For example, the word “onde” is pronounced ‘own-jay’, or “tinha” is pronounced ‘chee-na’.
Your best way to learn is probably Pimsleur lessons. I use them as well and you can find them on ebay. In a month you could probably get thru most if not all of the full set #1 (30 lessons) if you are VERY diligent, and be able to hold a basic conversation.
There are several other audios that are cheaper, such as FSI (you can rip these from BitTorrent I believe) and Living or Learning Languages. The last is nowhere near as good as Pimsleur, and I have no experience with FSI.
If you STILL need a book, get the Cortina Method “Conversational Brazilian Portuguese” to learn a lot of phrases that are useful — but — without the understand of pronounciation it is like reading french aloud. No one will really understand you that much.
